Are you looking for a great place to live in County Durham? As part of our #BranchSpotlight series, Stephen Rozanki from our Consett office takes us through five reasons why Consett is a wonderful place to call home.
1. Location
Stephen told us that “Consett is on the edge of the Derwent Valley and expansive countryside can be easily accessed in around 10 minutes and a drive across to the Derwent Reservoir is a real joy. The Derwent provides excellent fishing, a sailing club and wonderful untouched countryside. The city of Durham is only 20 minutes away, with its cosmopolitan and vibrant night life as well as a unique insight into times gone by with its historical buildings.”
Not only this, but Stephen went on to say that “competitive house prices have made Consett a place to consider for home hunters” and the good road links to the cities of Newcastle, Durham and Carlisle make it the perfect place for the commuter lifestyle.
2. People
When asked ‘What is your favourite thing about Consett?’, Stephen responded that “the people make Consett what it is” describing them as “friendly, down to earth and they have an excellent sense of humour.” Therefore, according to Stephen, if you’re looking for a community of neighbours who you’ll get on with, Consett might be the best place to go.
3. History
Stephen also gave us some great insights into Consett’s history. Here are the most interesting facts:
- Beamish Open Air Museum is a short drive away and is an excellent day out allowing you to take a step back in time to life in the north east of England during the 1820s, 1900s and 1940s.
- Sitting at nearly 900m above sea level, Consett is the third highest market town in Britain
- Well known for its steel industry in the past, Consett actually provided the steel that was used in the building of Blackpool Tower.
- A huge celebrity was born and raised in Consett, none other than Mr Bean and Blackadder himself, Mr Rowan Atkinson.
4. Development
If you’re looking for a house in Consett, there are lots of different opportunities. Stephen tells us that “the large regeneration and investment projects have led to a new and improved town infrastructure. House prices have remained very competitive and with a good mixture of new build developments and older stone built properties.” This means there a lot of different houses to choose from in Consett.
