How to move valuable items during a house move

If you’ve ever moved house, you’ll know how easy it is for items to become misplaced during a move. From kettles and toasters to phones and chargers, keeping track of your possessions as you relocate isn’t always easy.

While misplacing a kettle can be annoying, losing your passport, jewellery or other valuables during a move can be a bigger problem. To help you keep track of your most important possessions, we’ve put together a quick guide to keeping your valuables safe and secure when you’re on the move.

Pack valuables first

However big or small your property, and however organised you are, things can get chaotic quickly when moving day comes around. To ensure your valuables aren’t misplaced before you’ve even begun your move, put some time aside to get them packed up first. Taking care of your valuables before you start on the rest of the house will ensure you have the time and the patience to pack them properly and give you the opportunity to put them somewhere safe, secure and out of the way. 

Keep a note of where you put valuable items

How many times have you put something in a safe place and then immediately forgotten where that safe place is? To ensure you don’t lose all your valuables in one go, make a note of where you put your most important boxes, files and folders.

Put valuables in storage

If you really want to keep your valuables safe during a move, pack them up and put them into storage. Taking your most important belongings out your home before you begin packing the rest of your things will ensure your passports, jewellery and other valuables are well out of harm’s way for the duration of your move. If you don’t want to put them into storage, ask a trusted friend or family member to look after your important boxes until your new home is ready for them.
